The Ballarat & Grampians Community Legal Service is a not-for-profit Incorporated Association and a Registered Charity with financial reporting requirements to the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC) and to its external funding providers.
This year, PPT Audit have compiled audited financial statements, forming part of this report, and have provided an unqualified opinion that the statements provide a true and fair view of the organisation’s financial position and its ability to pay its debts as and when they come due.
The 2019/2020 financial year saw BGCLS continue the sustainability of its operations, with positive financial management ensuring continuing provision of legal services to those who needed them. The Service was fortunate to secure additional funding during the year to expand its operations and it now meets the financial requirements for a Large Charity under the ACNC requirements.
The Centre receives funding from Victoria Legal Aid, the Victorian Attorney General’s Office, prisons in the region and charitable donations, all of which are greatly appreciated and used to assist those in the community in need to obtain legal advice and support services. Specific funding is received for family violence responsiveness and front line services with additional funds received towards the end of the financial year to specifically address issues in the community raised by the COVID-19 virus.
As with most community service organisations the primary area of expenditure remains salaries and related costs, totalling more than 75% of all outgoings. This is however recognised as necessary for the provision and retention of a skilled and highly respected workforce.
BGCLS looks forward to a sustainable financial future with the same commitment to providing legal services and education to the people of Ballarat and the Grampians Region.
